Spolehlivý, všestranný, pohotový – takový byl čtyřmotorový bombardér Avro 683 Lancaster používaný během 2. světové války britským Královským letectvem. Byl jedním z nejvýznamnějších typů, které během války sloužily v RAF, a tvořil páteř britského Bomber Command v druhé polovině války. Poprvé byl bojově nasazen roku 1942 až jako poslední z trojice britských těžkých bombardérů. Lancastery v letech 1942–1945 provedly více než 156 tisíc operačních letů a svrhly přes tisíc kilogramů pum. Mezi nejslavnější akce Lancasteru patří Operace Chastise, kdy byly prolomeny dvě přehrady v Porúří, nebo potopení bitevní lodi Tirpitz. Na sklonku války se počítalo s jejich bojovým nasazením v Pacifiku, ale k tomu již pro rychlý konec bojů nedošlo.
