Stručný obsah:
V nepříliš vzdálené budoucnosti, asi třicet let po konečné válce, prochází pustinami kontinentu, který býval Amerikou, osamělý muž. Všude kolem něj se nacházejí opuštěná města, rozpadající se silnice, sežehlá země - pomníky nedávné katastrofy. Civilizace neexistuje, zákony neplatí. Cesty patří gangům, které jsou schopny člověka zabít kvůli botám, kvůli hltu vody...nebo prostě jen tak. Ale na tohoto poutníka nestačí. Eli, který se nestal bojovníkem z vlastní vůle, ale z nutnosti, touží po klidu a míru, ale pokud je k tomu donucen, rozdrtí své protivníky dříve, než si stačí uvědomit, jak osudné chyby se dopustili. Důvodem jeho boje nejsou obavy o vlastní život, ale naděje na budoucnost - naděje, kterou opatruje a chrání už po třicet let a je rozhodnutý ji proměnit ve skutečnost. Eli, poháněný smyslem pro povinnost a vedený vírou v cosi většího, než je on sám, dělá vše, co je třeba, aby přežil - a pokračoval ve svém úsilí. Jen jediný muž v tomto zničeném světě chápe, jakou moc má Eli ve svých rukou, a je rozhodnut ji získat pro sebe: Carnegie, samozvaný despotický vládce improvizovaného města zlodějů a zabijáků. Carnegieho adoptivní dceru Solara Eli fascinuje z jiného důvodu: nabízí naději na život lepší, než jaký panuje v říši jejího otce. Ani pro jednoho z nich ale nebude snadné ho přesvědčit, aby se svých plánů vzdal. Není ochoten se před ničím - a před nikým - zastavit. Je nucen naplnit svůj osud a zachránit zmučené lidstvo.
